Once I bought a pendant
From an odd shop, at the end of the lane
I am certain, that no such shop was there
When I walked by that place
The previous day in the rain.

It was nightfall, the wind was rising
The stars were gazing low
And methought, that in the dreadful darkness
I could see ghastly eyes glow.

I quickened my pace,
I tried not to look at their face
(The fey faces of those demons)
And I am sure, there were footfalls behind me
Of unhappy souls, that were making me a plea
To evict them from this wicked world
Yes, I am sure they were begging of me
To pray for them, so that they could be free
Free forever, from the encumber of this vile world

When I yelled with all my might:
I am not the Lord, nor am I a hallowed angel
So paraphernalia of the wicked, creatures of evil
That find no repose, be it night or the day that is feeble
Begone forever from my sight
For I am not the one, who can free you from your plight
Return again to the endless abyss
From where you come.

All the noises paused
And only the endless darkness thawed,
And in this nether worldly haze
I spied the stall,
That stood before me.

There was no one there,
And it gave me the feeling of an evil snare
But still I proceeded to check out the objects, macabre
That decorated it, in an unholy fashion
And before I knew, I was standing before my home in a daze
As I shifted my unsteady gaze
To the deep blue diamond pendant, that I had in my hands

It seemed to shine with a divine spark
And yet gave the feeling of an evil,
That seemed to be present from time primeval
I had the sudden impulse to throw it away
And keep the impending disaster at bay
When my wife, my sweet and lovely wife
Bella was her name, came out of the house.

She looked at me with a worried face,
But when she held the pendent in her gaze
Her face lightened up, and she kissed me on the lips
Standing on her petite toe tips,
And took the pendant from my hands
(Before I could forewarn her)

From that day forth, my Bella
My lovely Bella, who was blessed and loved by the heavens above
Changed....

She would not come out of her room
And the servants often found her in a swoon
She spoke with me less often
And at nights when the moon was high
She would stand on the veranda,
Holding the pendant in her hand.
(She let no one touch the pendant, and once
I threw it out of the window, but in the morn found it by her bedside)

Her health deteriorated day by day,
And no doctor would find anything amiss,
But there she lay in her demonic bliss
With a soft smile floating on her now pale lips
And her sunken eyes, stared at the hollow

And now sometimes I think,
She saw the disaster that was to follow
And leave my heart broken,
In a thousand glistening shards.

So now, as the darkness thickens
And once more I hear them come
I stand in the veranda
With the pendant in my hand

And hope...
That once again will I see her,
My Bella, My lovely Bella
Among the indiscernible crowd.
